Strategy Vs Tactics

While these two words, “strategy” and “tactics” appear to have the same meaning. Do not be fooled. The results attained from implementing strategies compared to tactics can differ a lot. Especially for those involved in business, profits can actually be maximized with a strategy that optimizes the correct blend of marketing tactics.

Strategy refers coming up with a devised plan to achieve to achieve a goal, how your business will achieve organizational goals and objectives. Hence you are looking at the big picture holistically. Without a well thought out strategy, your business is merely like a person walking aimlessly in the dark. There is no planned direction of where to go in the future nor which tactic to use.

In contrast to strategy, tactics involves the art of finding and implementing means to achieve particular immediate or short-term aims. Unfortunately for the general public, they are often disguised as strategies that will lead you to the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Fortunately for us, there are still a majority of business owners who do not understand the difference. Hence giving us the opportunity to stay ahead in the game.

Do you find yourself chasing the latest marketing trend? Are you tired of facing failure despite implementing the marketing “strategies” proposed by business experts, or perhaps getting weak results from your implementations?

This is because marketing tactics by themselves cannot stand alone as a single component. They need to be strengthened and blended with other marketing components to form a solid strategy. And it is really by mere chance that some experts have thriving businesses due to having the right marketing tactics pieced together.

So how does understanding the different between Strategy Vs Tactics affect you and what can you do about it? To thrive in today’s competitive markets, it is essential to plan a strategy that promotes synergy amongst your marketing tactics. Marketing tactics isolated might not bear the results that you are looking for, but if you have a strategy to pinpoint the exact dollar generators of your business. You will be able to optimize and earn multiple times the amount of profit you are earning right now. It can be a stark difference between business failure and business success.

For example, if you are in the internet marketing field. There are so many tactical components which require your attention.

Just to name a few: Search engine optimization, Pay-per-click marketing, Sales copywriting to increase sales conversions, List building, MySpace marketing, Squidoo marketing…the list goes on and on. There are just too many components which you have to work on for your online business. But which are the ones that you should work on improving to get maximum profits in the shortest time possible?

Ask around, different people will have different opinions on this. And probably more so if they are selling a product related to one of the tactical components mentioned above. Believe me, none of them would be able to convince you with well documented numbers which is the best tactic to pursue. For the simple reason being that they themselves have not analyzed and thought out their own strategy for making money online. Yes they might be well-respected individuals who are earning a lot of money online. But what they failed to grasp is that they could actually be earning many times over with a strategy.

As Seth Godin amply put it:

“The right strategy makes any tactic work better. The right strategy puts less pressure on executing your tactics perfectly.

Here’s the obligatory January skiing analogy: Carving your turns better is a tactic. Choosing the right ski area in the first place is a strategy. Everyone skis better in Utah, it turns out.

If you are tired of hammering your head against the wall, if it feels like you never are good enough, or that you’re working way too hard, it doesn’t mean you’re a loser. It means you’ve got the wrong strategy.”

If you are interested in learning how you can increase your profits by at least 500% through optimization of your online business.

If you are keen to understand the strategy that you can adopt to STOMP OUT your competition.

If you want to understand which tactical components are your dollar generators that you should be focusing on.

If you want to stop wasting valuable resources purchasing overpriced products and getting miserable results.

Then you should…

It reveals the strategy that any business owner, online or offline should be adopting to maximize profits in the shortest time possible. All of us have limited resources, and we owe it to ourselves to only concentrate on the areas which yield the highest profit.

Lastly, the beauty of it all is that the concept is universal and applicable to every business owner. You have to face the million dollar question now, “Do you have a strategy or are you just waiting for that lucky break?”

Fundamental distinction, good post.

my 2 cents

Strategic questions: what value do you bring to society? what is the need? how will you serve it? what are barriers of entry you are building? what are your annual, quarterly goals?

Tactical questions: how will you accomplish those quarterly goals? the monthly ones? weekly ones?

Thank you for your kind comments everyone.

Alvaro:
I think you summed up the differences between strategy and tactics very well with those questions. I’m sure everyone would appreciate it. =)

Karabo:
Its all a matter of over-delivering on the promises made to the client. Sincerity goes a long way too. Whilst there are times that the client might not need your services after a particular job. You will be sure that they would think of you should they have a job you can fulfill. And of course there’s always the referrals that they will send you.

When first starting out, these prove to be a small but your efforts will build up a momentum of huge referral business in the future.

Great post. And so true, it’s our combined marketing efforts that bring us in the work. It is no good just throwing arrows aimlessly and hoping to hit something. You’ve got to have a plan.

Very telling how people are pursuing tactics with the belief that this is a strategy to bring them actual success. A good clear strategy cannot be so broad as “make money online” or “be successful”.

Excellent stuff! Unfortunately many people are “taken in” by the tactics of the day by some johnny-come-lately-guru(s) so they totally miss out on their overall strategy.
